This Story Site is an Android App

This Site is a Combination Web-Site and Android App.

To anyone that may be reading this. The Android App and Website are my creation, however, I am still learning to use them effectively. The Website is expanding in it's abilities. Behind the scenes, It can capture and store URLS in a database. It can display the as retrieved data or convert them into HTML Web-pages. It automatically backs itself up and backs up it's database on Google Drive.

Some seemingly small things were problems. Apostrophes for example. Out of the box, apostrophes have no place in a database. In the beginning using apostrophes was not possible. Now I can use words that use an apostrophe such as can't and won't. To me that makes it very effective. I'm not the best typer in the world so the abilities to speak and have it all be be turned to text to post on-line is very new to me. I also do not baby my environment for input. For example right now I have two fans blowing on me and I'm watching a movie. I am in the Philippines, fans are a necessity. As I said I use voice to do my entries and by nature the voice recognition puts a period, when I say period, but no space after it. I had to make an auto-space after a period when using voice. What I found very humorous about this is at times I talk to myself just a little bit and it also is being recorded.

Making the website totally responsive so I could use the app on my phone or tablet was a bit of a challenge, small but very important to have all controls easily accessible. My Administration area is neat lots of programmer toys there. This has been fun, but a long project.

Break the Boredom Make Something Move

This set designed to start with a button click, HOWEVER, it is 'duck soup easy' ( that means very easy ) to make it start to move when the page is loaded. Just use:

window. onload = function start { slidit(); }

slidit() being the function I would auto-start.

// if the three lines below are enabled the function slideit() will start automatically // no startbutton is required.

This is a neat improvement. I just added a file uploader to this program.

Neon Eclipse

Neon Eclipse Icon

My project of the day. Making an upload capability for my SALTMAN site and making icons for my Ununtu Linux desktop.

What is the Purpose of Saltman

Life has been good to me. I have learned a lot of lessons in life. I will be sixty eight this month. I have things I wish to say and share. It is a combination of thoughts and helpful hints. This is the location I have chosen to do that in. I have a YouTube channel with almost 7000 subscribers and 4 million views. That makes me think matbe I have some interesting things to say. Welcome to The Tales of the Saltman'.

How Strange Life Is

Sixty Eight Years Alive

I must honestly admit I`m astounded by life now. I had wanted for some time to write a book about my feelings and what I think of life. Some postings will be fun some educational and some, I must admit, are things barely worth reminiscing about and somethings are not worth mentioning but, still I want to pass it on to somebody that may be interested. I want this to be kind of like a junk shop, there is something here for everyone.

Drinking - Not For Many Years

I made a mistake in my videos joking about drinking. I have had conversations with people that though I spend my time getting drunk. I am happy here, do not drink excessively. I want to clearly remember every day. The thought of sitting back in the tropics drinking Margaritas is a 'romantic' thought. That illusion was inspired by Jimmy Buffet, I enjoy life and I program, both which can be hindered with too much alcohol. I have reached an age where I think it is best for to milk and juice and avoid the beer, I still do have an occasional shot with the guys to be social, but that is rare. The beer a day is long gone. ha ha ha ha HONESTLY, this second Myra walked in with two boxes of milk ha ha haha

I do not wish to encourage people to come to the Philippines to party and get drunk. Not only is it bad for the American image in a place where they still look up to Americans, but because to get drunk can be dangerous. The Philippines is nice. It, just like the USA has safe and dangerous areas. With a few drinks under your belt you may find it hard to differentiate the two.

Scuba Diving Lessons

I was in Florida. The land of beautiful beaches and warm water to swim in. I always enjoyed spending time at the beach and loved the sea creatures I could see from in the shallows and the shoreline. I had a few friends that scuba dived and thought what a neat way to pass some of the the week-ends. A friend of mine was a scuba instructor. He told me held classes on the week-ends and had a vacancy coming up in a couple weeks. I signed up for the lessons with the hope of getting my PADI license. I had never even touched a set of tanks, so I was bubbling with excitement at the thought of actually going beyond the shore and underwater to explore the coral and creatures that lived there. I was so full of anticipation that the two weeks just creeped along. Finally, when the day of the first class came I was charged up and ready to go.

Microsoft's abandonment of Window XP users.

I was in the Philippines when Microsoft decided to abandon it"s devoted Windows XP users. This is a poor country, and most of the people that have computers could not afford to purchase an upgrade. If they could, quite often their hardware could not handle the requirements demanded by the new operating system. Those couldn't still had low cost Internet Cafes available. OPP ! Almost all the cafes were also running Windows XP. I saw a multi-billion dollar company that expected a person that makes $75 to $150 a month to buy a new operation system and put it on grossly under powered computer. I saw with my eyes, struggling government offices booting up to Windows XP way past its "abandonment". I also saw many medical practices unable to computerize because of cost. I saw a county just getting introduced to the computer revolution, abandoned and stifled in its progress. That was the bases of my decision to end my bond with Windows and decided to learn and promote Linux. So with all that bad karma out of the way. Let"s talk Linux . Talk Talk I love it I am 100% Linux and surprisingly do not miss Windows.

The Jet Engine and catching the garage on fire.

I was about 15 years old and had been to a science fair. One of the favorite exhibits was a home made jet engine. I was excited at the thought of the small engine at the science fair was very impressive and drew quite the crowd. I remember thinking on the way home, "I can build that". Now as I look back it was no real jet engine in the sense of turbines and moving parts. At the time it was a jet engine to me and something I could build at home.

It was a week-end, no school, and upon I immediately upon my arrival home I got to work gathering the parts. A large long tubular structure for the ignition and expansion chamber. Air Horns there were a large set of air horns in the garage just gathering dust. An igniter I could use a spark plug, and a car regulator turned into a buzzer to pulse the electricity from a battery and hook it to an ignition coil. Now I have a constant arching spark plug.

Have you ever seen a hand pump insect sprayer. Basically it blows air over a tube in liquid the liquid gets sucked up and blown out. Like an airbrush, airbrush might be a better example. Now do that with gasoline inside the air-horn with a spark-plug igniter and you have a jet engine. The air supply, the air compressor. I put all the pieces together.

The Test

I secured the 'jet engine' in a vice on the work bench. The compressor valve was across the bench. The wall was concrete and about ten feet away from the engine. The engine at school blew a blue flame about a foot long. I had plenty of room. The compressor had pressure. I flipped on the igniter,I could hear the spark plug arching. Then reached over the engine and turned on the air-valve to blow the gas over the spark plug. ROAR !! It worked BIG TIME it worked. So loud and efficient it worked, it scared me half to death. NO one foot flame like school. It was more like 2 foot of blue flame and three or four yellow flames. The yellow flames went upwards towards the ceiling. I freaked. I had to reach over the engine, which by now was red hot, to turn off the air pressure. Scared to get that close to it I used a crowbar and flipped the air off. It did not stop. It had built enough suction from the exhaust to continue sucking gas up. Now what OMG ! I was afraid to cut the gas because maybe the fire would back down the tube to the gas can. Cut power to the the spark plug. Didn't work. The tube was red hot self ignited now it did not even need the spark plug. The ceiling was turning black. I was in BIG big trouble. No other choice, yank the gas can away and run. That is what I did almost immediately the engine stopped.

The Great Bikini Motorcycle Accident

I was on my way to look at a van. I had a motorcycle and thought how neat it would be to have a van to transport my bike and sleep. I loved to travel around the state and this could add a bit more distance without having the added expense of finding lodging. My friend and I, both on motorcycles, went together to see the van I had found in the paper. We were cruising down the road looking around and trying to find the street mentioned in the ad.

War, What is it Good For?

Absolutely Nothing or is It a Blessing ?

This writing, as many of my social communications, I introduce a seed for thought. If you have lost a loved one to war, that is easy to answer. It is a curse. When looking at war as a world wide social unit and not from a personal point of view the answer is not so clear cut. Just as sweet and sour makes for a tasty dish perhaps war and peace satisfies the taste of the world.

This article was inspired by a question that came to mind this morning. I was wondering how many people have been born throughout the existence of man. To research this I read articles from Population Reference Bureau (dated 2011). Also there was a good source of information in the Wikipedia Org that discussed World population. It reffered to Population Reference Bureau. To me that added credibility to their numbers of about 107,000,000,000 people have been born. About which about 6% are alive today. That shows what an astounding increase in population we are experiencing. If you have interest in this topic of world population and it's growth rate. If you have interest in the world population Our World in Data Org is a 'must see' website.

I looked at a few other sites that left me with the conclusion, that probably about 107,000,000, give or take a couple billion was a reasonable guess. That most site agreed upon. So I think as a normal process of thinking I started wondering how many people would exist if there was no war. When I looked THAT information varied dramatically. From less to about 4 billion more than the current population. The reasoning, that it would be less, was very understandable. I truly believe less, upon close consideration of the following facts. My thoughts begin to drift from population to war and the song "WAR WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR" came to mind as I read on. Does war serve a necessary purpose in the development of civilization? It is a requirement to be 'civilized' ? I always thought of war as the most uncivilized nature of man. Am I wrong?

War is a mother of invention:

Some Food for Thought

Economic stimulation, industries flourish with war. They have came forth with with a myriad of manufacturing techniques for more efficient means of productions.

Because of war there has been extensive technological development due to warfare efforts. War intensifies research and development. These accomplishments continue to benefit civilians long after the war is over.

War's effect on medicine is astronomical. The advances range from prevention and cures for disease to repair and restoration from grievous injury to rehabilitation techniques. The ability to deal with trauma to the creation of prosthetics and of advanced rehabilitation must credit a response to the treatments of war injury. If cancer was caused by war it probably would have been cured already.

Wars encourage extensive research and development, leading to technological progress. Not only in the machines of war, but protective clothing, food preservation, fast immediate medical response, and communications.

Darwinian evolution states the strong survive. War thins weakness and ineptitude. our civilization now is the result of the strong surviving. We are descendants of the clans, groups and countries full people that grouped together and grew strong in order to to win a war.

War has freed oppressed people.

This I say with great trepidation, but training for war and war has long been a means of a young man top prove his way to manhood. It builds character and self confidence not only for an individual but for a nation. It brings forth pride and nationalist unity.

I read on-line, "War and trade have created our society, taking one out cripples humanity." I must agree.

THE BENEFITS OF WAR.

By Rear-Admiral S. B. Luce, United States Navy (1891)

.

War is one of the great agencies by which human progress is effected.

Scourge though it be, and much as its practice is to be deplored, we must still recognize war as the operation of the economic laws of nature for the government of the human family. It stimulates national growth, solves otherwise insoluble problems of domestic and political economy, and purges a nation of its humors. According to an ancient proverb, Purgamenta hujus mundi sunt tria, pestis, helium, etfrateria.

War is the malady of nations ; the disease is terrible while it lasts, but purifying in its results. It tries a nation and chastens it, as sickness or adversity tries and chastens the individual. There is a wisdom that comes only of suffering, whether to the family or to the aggregation of families — the nation. Man is perfected through suffering.

Concrete Spider Coffins

Finding Concrete Spider Coffins as a Kid

My father was a contractor so any of the personal construction projects he undertook were done by he and I, or with his crew. He was building a garage to work on his construction equipment so it was quite large. He to of course start with the concrete floor a project that took about three days with a small motorized concrete mixer. During that time when will using the motorized cement mixer There were times when they were little pools of concrete that have run from the machine down on the ground I had noticed that the little mud dauber and a wasp That makes a mud nest Or sometimes down in the cement Gathering up the cement just as they would Gathering mud and taking off To build a little mud dauber nests in places where they laid their larvae Now how a mud dauber lives or how it reads Is it lays eggs inside of a mud Housing. What they do when they catch spiders and they sting them and paralyzing Then they take the spiders put them inside Of the mud columns they make And lay their eggs on the spiders When the colonists feel The chamber is sealedWhen do mud daubers reached a level of maturity That they can crawl out of the Mudhouse Or the mud NurseryWhat happened when they use the country as they made concrete coffins for the spiders and for their eggs I have noticed this and next spring when I looked at some of the houses inside the garage Many of them had been open with that Larva development broke out and washed away However there were many that were made out of concrete That were never opened I took some of them and I broke up and realize that these were concrete coffins They were still filled with a paralyzed spidersFor some reason the eggs didn't hatch And the spiders had been encased inside of the concrete coffinsParalyzed unable to move Forever

Now I am using my text to speech editor on This is speech to text So what doesn't make any sense will have to be cleaned up But basically that is the story of the spiders and I concrete coffins

Happy Birthday to Me - 68 years alive

Well, today I turned 68. Honestly hard to believe. My room mate and I purchased life insurance on each other at twenty five years old. We made each other beneficiaries. We were both sure we would never make it past the next year. We were into some bad stuff and we're lucky to get out of the drug scene. Life is so strange and varies so much. The only thing consistent is change. I love life and honestly would not go back and change a thing. I realize the slightest change might result in today being another outcome. Today, life is good.

I had a dream. Some 'power that be' offered me a chance to go back and be twenty one again. In my dream, I freaked. I said, "No, No once is enough. " I was so scared I had to do it over again. I love my life, but damn, once us enough.

Linux for the Masses

Linux for the Masses "My Own Ubuntu Linux Notes" Introduction I have an astounding love for computers, hardware and software, programming languages and the Internet. I am a computer geek and not a writer. That being said, you must be wondering why in the world is this Dude writing an E-book then. Because I hope I can pass on some bits and bytes of information to assist you in your computing endeavors. If you're young, I hope to spur your interest and be an inspiration for you to develop your computer skills. You are bound to think if that old Dude can do it, I certainly can. If you are older this may not lead you into a new career, but might keep you off the streets, out of the dance halls and keep your mind sharp.

A million years ago, I was a hard core DOS Dude. I remember saying, Windows 3. 1, who needs them. I often said, with the vehemence of a spoiled maid, " I don't do windows. " I loved the working from a command line. That of course changed, but with every operating system I hung onto the one I was currently using, shirking any mention of the 'next generation' of operating systems. I had tried Linux in it's youth. Back when a power failure meant a reinstall because of the improper shut down. I also fooled a bit with Mac's, but was a Windows was followed up to the death and abandonment of Windows XP. Then I decided to give serious interest to Ubuntu Linux. Funny how things cycle. Although Linux does not require it, I am back to doing much of my work from a command line again. I want to reiterate the line above 'Although Linux does not require it'. I am repeating that because the idea of working in a command line freaks a lot of people out. I don't want anyone running to high ground before they even get their feet wet.

In my mind, I compare Windows and Linux to Brand New Car and an Old Pickup Truck. If you buy a brand new car it will be expensive but needs absolutely no tinkering in fact you must keep it 'updated' to maintain your warranty. Pop in and drive leave the tuning to professional mechanics. I was always the old pickup truck kind of guy. I loved tinkering in the garage examining, modifying, tuning it up. Plus it was cheap, if I dinged it playing around, Oh Well ! Yep That is Linux to me. I am retired and live in the Philippines. I took the picture on the cover where a friend built a Bamboo Nipa Hut. I was in the Philippines when Microsoft decided to abandon it's devoted Windows XP users. This is a poor country, and most of the people that have computers could not afford to purchase an upgrade. If they could, quite often their hardware could not handle the requirements demanded by the new operating system. Those couldn't still had low cost Internet Cafes available. OPP ! How to Compile a Program from a Download

How to Compile a Program from a Download

Open a terminal window. The terminal window may be opened by holding down the control and alt keys and while they are still pressed, push the letter Use the command cdto navigate to the directory ( folder ) where the download was directed. This is usually /home/user/Downloads. If a README file was included with with instructions, use that instead. Extract the files with one of the commands If it is a tar. gztar xvzf MYPACKAGE. tar. gz if it is a tar. bz2tar xvjf MYPACKAGE. tar. bz2 Find the configure file and enter. /configure the . / will execute the file called configure. If permission error is indicated, the file's permissions must be made executable. Executing chmod command with the following perameters will permit the file to be executed. Enter sudo chmod a+x configure Then enter . /configure again. Then make the install files by entering make Followed by entering sudo make install Downloading a Package from Synaptic Package Manager Sources or the Software-Center. If you install a package via the software sources and not downloading the package on your own, you will get new updates to that package and install them via the Update Manager. You could just install MYPACKAGE by typing in a terminal: sudo apt-get install MYPACKAGE If using the software-center and search for MYPACKAGE. If required package located follow the instructions. Always read the More Info . Often times the package you desire will have dependencys that extend its basic abilities. Terminal and Software-Center installs are, as you see, much easier and Terminal and software-center packages rarely have installation or compatability issues. Online Repository Resources This must begin with a brief explanation of repositories. These are on-line resources. They are provide and updated in an on-line storage system. Non-sanctioned repositories must be reviewed and evaluated by you. You must evaluate the credibility and security of the source. That is really quite easy using proper on-line search inquiries. Once the decision is made, enter the repository information as provided by the resource, in the terminal. The computer will download an index of the files available. Sometimes these indexes are quite large and many of the programs available are of no use to you. sudo apt-get update udates the index of files, it does not install them. It takes the sudo apt-get install to actually install the programs on your computer. Enter the command sudo apt-get update That command will update all the information on all the repositories available. sudo apt-get upgrade will upgrade any files or packages that have upgrades available. It will show you any upgrades and you must reply with a y to permit the download. Packages and upgrades are installed through the terminal the same as mentioned above sudo apt-get MYPACKAGE. The difference being, now the resources of the newly added repository are available.
